I was never a reader through high school and college. Isn’t it ironic that often in learning institutions (schools), students don’t want to read, where is the love of learning? I started really learning and growing after I graduated college! One of my homeschooling mottos is:
“If I teach my children to love learning, I’ve taught them everything they’ll ever need to know! If I force them to learn facts, then that’s the height of all they’ll ever know.”
And some of my favorite quotes from Lamplighter Audio Drama CD’s (awesome audio productions that teach valuable lessons!!)
“Reading helps you escape from small thinking.”
“Five years from now you’ll be the same person you are today except for the people that you meet and the books that you read.”
“Good books have a lot of competition… television, lack-of-vision…”
“If you’re not reading, you’ve been missing out on treasures for too long.”
“If you want to be a leader, you’ve got to be a reader.”
“When you read, you discover. And what you discover becomes your own.”
Reading has changed my life immensely. It really has helped me escape from small thinking! If you read good, Biblically-sound books, your life will never be the same again!
If I wouldn’t have read the books below, I know for sure I’d be aimlessly wandering and not even know it! I feel like reading has given me a clear vision and purpose. I’m looking out onto the world with a new set of glasses!
We got rid of broadcast tv in 2007 and haven’t missed it since. Actually, we look back and realize that the choice to have no broadcast television in our home is one of the best and wisest decisions we’ve ever made. What you feed into your body shapes who you are. If you watch Hollywood’s garbage, it works on your heart more than you know, over time. But if you instead only ever view clean, family media, you become less tainted by the world. Trust me, it happened to me!
A Side Note: If you know me personally, my bookshelf is your bookshelf. As long as you return my items so I can continue to share them with others, please help yourself to any of these items that I own! I truly mean that! It would be an honor to me to be able to share!
Here are my most favorite reads that I do highly recommend:
The King James Bible– Absolutely amazing and life changing to read from cover to cover! Wow, God is SO huge and so powerful and so incredibly majestic. I had read much of the Bible before, I’ve been in church pretty much my whole life. But reading ALL of the Bible from cover to cover has changed my life forever! It took me 10 months my first time, 2 ½ years the second time, 11 months the third time and currently reading all the way through for my 4th time! I started out with a goal to read just 3 chapters a week, starting small ensures success! But I’d read a cliff hanger chapter and then just couldn’t put it down. I got up to, I don’t know, somewhere around 35 chapters some weeks. I just couldn’t get enough! Funny how we’re so reluctant to pick up the Bible and read but once we actually START, God gives us a hunger for more! Rich, powerful stuff! Dive in!
Love Life for Every Married Couple by Ed Wheat, MD- Tops on my list of marriage books! It’s a long book but the best marriage book I’ve read to date! Connectedness. Sharing Life.
One Thing You Can’t Do in Heaven by Mark Cahill- Life changing! A complete helpbook for sharing Jesus with others around you!
Why Pro-Life? by Randy Alcorn- Even if you’re already pro-life, this little book is excellent! Exposes the dangers and fallacies to the pro-choice argument and gives solid evidence for the pro-life argument.
The Treasure Principle by Randy Alcorn- Incredible little book! Left me pondering for weeks!
One Thousand Gifts by Ann Voskamp- Highly Recommend! If we learn what it really means to be thankful, our lives would be much richer.
More Than Enough by Dave Ramsey- Character. People with strong fundamental values are the ones who end up with “More than enough” in life.
Cancer: Step Outside the Box by Ty Bollinger- This book is PACKED full of awesome health info. The thing is, most of us don’t look into cancer until we have it. But doing things that will prevent cancer is the real cure. I guarantee this one is worth your time to read!!
Raising Godly Children in an Ungodly World by Ham & Ham (available as an e-book)- Leaving a legacy. Every parent should read! Give your children vision and a Godly purpose in life. How to choose the best education option for your children.
The Duggar’s: 20 and Counting by Jim Bob & Michelle Duggar- The Duggar parents, who have 18 (at the time of this writing) children, share their hearts, fun stories, and many tips and ideas for Godly parenting and homeschooling while running a busy home.
A Love That Multiplies by Jim Bob & Michelle Duggar- The second book by the Duggar’s, parents of 19 children, who share their heartfelt story of their 24-week gestation baby Josie that was born premature. The book is also full of ideas, tips, and encouragement on parenting, homeschooling, and teaching your child Christ-like character. I also recommend buying their TLC shows on DVD for clean, family entertainment!
The Total Money Makeover by Dave Ramsey- If you haven’t read this easy-read book, you may be missing out on true financial freedom. Very motivating and inspiring! I also highly recommend his Financial Peace University 9-week class. I don’t agree with everything Dave says, but his financial advice and baby steps have changed lives.
Created to Be His Help Meet– Hands down, a MUST read for every wife! Unless you had a near perfect mother, you probably haven’t had anyone ever show you what it means to be a Proverbs 31 woman. If you’re like me, no one has ever taught you how to be a Titus 2 wife. If you want practical, no-nonsense, instruction on how to be the wife God created you to be, then read this book!
The Power of Motherhood: What the Bible Says About Mothers by Nancy Campbell- Truly, a powerful book, very eye-opening as to the enormous weight of motherhood. This book will give you a LOT to chew on! Rich stuff! Mama, Get this one and start working though it (it might take a while, but oh, SO worth it!)
Confessions of a Medical Heretic by Robert Mendelsohn,MD- Parents are the ones responsible for their child’s health more than any other person in the world, including their doctor. Mama, it’s your responsibility, read this book!
Raising a Healthy Child In Spite of Your Doctor by Robert Mendelsohn,MD- Similar theme and same author as above listed book, only this one covers many health topics that have to do with children… tonsillectomies, tubes in ears, vaccinations, and much more.
Passionate Housewives Desperate for God by Chancey & McDonald- This is a fantastic book. Every wife should read! Gives you encouragement and HOPE and dispels many of the myths we sometimes unconsciously believe. It definitely taught me about different myths I had believed and it sets you free! Think you’re fat, ugly, unworthy? Read this book and be set free!
Your Body’s Many Cries for Water by Batmanghdidj,MD- A whole book about WATER! It’ll make you think for sure! The one thing I don’t agree with is that he doesn’t talk about what kind of water you should be drinking… PURE water of course, not cocktail tap water! He discusses all the things he believes plain water can heal, which is quite the lengthy list indeed!
Family Driven Faith by Voddie Bauchman Jr- This book really changed my outlook on this topic, I don’t even know that I even thought that the family being torn apart in every direction was even a real problem I needed to worry about. Although I don’t agree with everything this author says, every parent needs to read this book! It’s all about the FAMILY and not being constantly segregated (church, school, babysitting, sports- seemingly good things are constantly separating the family, and it’s a bigger problem than we realize). The family is the backbone of society and it’s high time the family starts staying together.
Preparing to Be A Help Meet by Debi Pearl- I read this to see if I would want to give it to a teenage girl as a gift. YES! Every teen and young single should read this one! I especially like how the author says that while you’re waiting around for Mr. Right, you should be BUSY serving and ministering and developing homemaker skills that you can use in the future. I wish someone would have told me to start learning parenting skills, cooking skills, sewing skills, organization skills, natural pregnancy and childbirth, caring for your child’s health, etc BEFORE I got so busy with little ones around!
Confessions of an Organized Homemaker by Schofield- This book taught me a lot of organizational skills in my first couple years of marriage. We still have many of her organizing methods in place in our home! They really work! There are a lot of other books out there like this that are probably just as good, this was just the one that my husband happened to bring home to me! 🙂
Vaccinations: Deception & Tragedy by Michael Dye- There are MANY books on the dangers and downsides to vaccines. Get a few of them and READ them before you make the very important decision on whether you should vaccinate your children or not. It’s YOUR decision Mom & Dad, don’t take it lightly! It’s YOUR responsibility to do the research, not the doctor, not the nurse, not the trusted friend. This one was a pretty good one, I’d recommend it, among others.
Priceless by Dave Ramsey- a short book about Dave’s story through bankruptcy and beyond. How he went from riches to rags to debt-free riches!
The Power of A Praying Wife by Stormie Omartian- This really gave me an eternal view on the importance of praying for all aspects of my husband’s life: his career, his fatherhood, his leadership, his financial responsibility, his peers, his church, etc. Very neat to be reminded to pray for him in so many areas!
Lies Women Believe by Nancy Leigh DeMoss- This one started off slow, but after reading it, I could see how much it taught me. The author goes through many lies we often believe and what the real truth is concerning that topic. She talks about being overweight, being a perfectionist, being sloppy, being ugly, being unliked by friends, and many other hard-hitting subjects.
It’s All In Your Head: The Link Between Mercury Amalgams and Illness by Dr. Hal Huggins- A book exposing the dangers of silver amalgam dental fillings for cavities. He discusses the extreme dangers of mercury in the fillings and how this toxicity is linked with many diseases. Don’t ever let a dentist give you or your children a silver filling!!
Sheperding a Child’s Heart by Tedd Tripp- A great parenting book! Go for the heart!
Reference Book- Prescription for Nutritional Healing by Balch & Balch- I refer to this book very often, it’s a good one to keep on your shelf. Covers everything A-Z from bruises to back pain, a bee sting, or cancer. It gives information on every ailment and what natural remedies you can use to help along with advice and dosages and more.
Lamplighter Theater Audio Dramas– I’ve enjoyed these more than my children have! These are powerful audio’s with gripping stories and rich life lessons!
Regular Publications that I subscribe to and read fully– Above Rubies Magazine, American Family Association Journal, No Greater Joy Magazine, and Answers In Genesis Newsletters. I highly recommend all of the above! And they’re all free! Above Rubies and No Greater Joy have GREATLY encouraged me as a mother and taught me things I don’t think I ever would have figured out on my own!
DVD- Creation Seminar– Dr. Kent Hovind 17 hours of fast-paced information on Creation vs. Evolution. This DVD set has impacted our lives enormously. So many Christians either don’t care about this subject or think that it’s not important. Whoa! The FOUNDATION is what is MOST important! This seminar is the most non-boring DVD set I’ve ever seen. I’ve watched/listened to it numerous times actually! If you don’t think the subject of Creation is an important one, WATCH these DVD’s!! Your faith will be so strengthened and you’ll be able to KNOW if the Bible is 100% truth or not. If you want faith like a boulder rock, come feed on these. 🙂
DVD- The Explosion of Childhood Illness Explained– Renee Tocco- Although the speaker narrates this entire DVD, rather than talking freely with no script, the information contained is eye-opening. If you have children or want to have children some day, watch this DVD! She talks about the different causes for childhood illnesses like asthma, allergies, autism, ADHD, and many more.
DVD- Are Vaccines Safe?– Mary Tocco- I’ve read innumerable books and articles on vaccines and this DVD is a great summary of them all. She gives solid research and statistics and raises very important questions that every parent needs to ask. I HIGHLY recommend this DVD! Especially if all the vaccine books are overwhelming to you.
DVD- Raising Godly Children in an Ungodly World– Ken Ham- This DVD is great, like much of the material from Answers in Genesis, because he discusses the FOUNDATIONS of our faith. He hits home the huge responsibility parents have to equip their child with the truth and give them a firm foundation from home. The schools nor the church can raise your child to be a strong and mighty warrior, it comes from Dad and Mom.
DVD- The Business of Being Born– I hesitate to put his on my list because it contains some swear words throughout the documentary. Why do movie-makers leave that junk in movies?? Grrr… BUT, the content is good. If you are pregnant or plan to become pregnant, you really ought to either watch this DVD with your spouse or read some good books like Gentle Birth Choices, Natural Childbirth the Bradley Way, etc. There are many others about the importance of delivering a drug-free baby softly and tenderly into his Mama’s arms. Please don’t make health decisions concerning you and your baby without being informed, it could really hurt you or your baby in the end.
DVD- Food Matters: Let Thy Food Be Thy Medicine– a great documentary on how food really does matter in your overall life, your health. Very eye-opening. It will help you instantly start making great health changes that you’ll want to continue to do the rest of your life. A great DVD to watch and share with others!
DVD- Food Inc– A documentary about how food is processed and delivered to your store shelves. The long lists of ingredients, the corn that’s in everything, the MSG, the pesticides, the crowded chicken houses. Uck. We need to know this information though so that we can make informed decisions at the grocery store! My husband still makes jokes like when I spend $5 on a little bag of pine nuts and he says “you could have gotten 5 cheeseburgers for that! It’s a joke from the movie!
