Don’t be fooled… making homemade ketchup is EASY!! Just throw your ingredients in a pan and let ’em simmer!
Before I give you this recipe, I have to say… I have never worked so hard on a recipe before! To perfect this ketchup, it has taken me TEN tries, not 2, not 5, but TEN!! For the first 7, my husband would say, “ah, not quite there yet.” At trial number 8, he said it was the best yet so I knew I was getting close. He really liked number 9 but thought it was missing just a little more zip. Trial number TEN did it! So now I’m here to share with you my top secret, hard workin’ homoemade ketchup recipe!
2 Cans Tomato Paste
3/4 cup Pure Water
3 Tbsp ACV (Apple Cider Vinegar, I use Bragg’s Raw ACV)
2 1/2 tsp Onion Powder (or a little more, be generous)
2 1/2 tsp Garlic Powder
2 1/2 Tbsp Maple Syrup (the REAL stuff)
1 1/2 Tbsp Agave Nectar (sold near honey) (feel free to add more if you like your ketchup sweeter)
2 Tbsp Xylitol (a sugar substitute) (can skip this if you use extra agave/ maple syrup)
2 tsp Sea Salt
Place all ingredients in a pan, stir well. Simmer for one hour, stirring occasionally. Add another teaspoon of salt and another teaspoon of sweetener. Taste and see if anything needs adjusted- salt, sweetener, garlic, onion. If yours isn’t quite perfect, it’s probably salt or sweetener that you need.
Tip: Make sure your onion powder and garlic powder are very fine. If they are clumpy, grind them in a little spice/coffee grinder to get them to a pure powder.
Note: You could probably sub my sweeteners with whatever sweetener you prefer, try at your own risk!
This makes the perfect texture to put in a ketchup bottle and squirt away! So you can “trick” your family by putting your homemade ketchup into an old ketchup container and they’ll think it’s the store-bought! And you’ll feel like such a great homemaker for making your family HOMEMADE ketchup!!
